THE EXPECTATIONS

THE EXPECTATIONS

exhibition created by Iwona Kin

Curratorial rationale

The topic of my exhibition involves the widely interpreted creation of expectations and their influence on our lives, the significance of which is often diminished. The expectations we have for ourselves, the ones others have for us, the ones the society presses on every single person in the world- they are all equally destructive to our health. As I want to show, they have an especially detrimental effect on us if set too high. The presented artworks are supposed to make the viewer slightly uncomfortable. Sometimes they will feel like intrudes or like really close friends to me, although we are strangers.

If the exhibition took place at school, and not online, that feeling of intrusion would be emphasized by the display of the artworks- each artwork was meant to have its own tent, separating it from others. It would be a way to create intimate places for all pieces, limiting the number of people sharing the experience of looking at the same piece at the same time. It should make seeing the artworks even more uncomfortable. The idea of presenting the viewer as an intrude, visible in some of my pieces mainly by presenting personal situations, was inspired by the painting entitled „Suzanna and the Elders”, by Artemisia Gentileschi. The background of the display was supposed to be very dark (most probably grey or black) and not textured, so that it would not prepossess the focus from the meaning and importance of works.

Throughout the course, I opened myself to various new techniques. I started it just as a photographer, yet now I feel comfortable with many other media. The exhibition consists of six artworks, all of which deal with different topics, connected with their origin- expectations. Anxiety, depression, inequality, self-harming or feeling like an outcast in one's own life- are all consequences of the standards the society creates for everyone. We tend to seek the "perfect jobs", "ideal bodies", "the best possible life". But who decides which ones are perfect? I wanted to indicate the significance of the harmfulness of that phenomenon, which is clearly visible among people nowadays, yet underestimated.

The exhibition is based on unpleasant experiences of mine, my friends and family. That is why all artworks are personal to me. Although they all present somewhat different situations, I think that displaying them all in one place presents the actual influence and meaning of „standards”.
